It is with shock and great sadness that we let all of Zeitgeist's friends and supporters know that while delivering flyers for last Friday's performance by FLAM-CHEN, New Orleans dancer and performance artist LUCAS COX, was tragically killed in a bicycle accident on Camp Street. He had performed at Zeitgeist on numerous occasions with Happensdance, as a solo artist and most recently with Kathy Randels and J. Hammons. He was an amazing and gifted artist and friend to all those fortunate to have met him.

Friday, September 20 @ 8:00 p.m.

OPEN SCREENING/POTLUCK: In our everlasting mission to support and foster New Orleans' media community, we once again are proud to host the Fall's first Open Screening/Potluck hosted by media artist/instructor Courtney Egan. The event is open to all area media artists who would like to screen a short video or film, or excerpt from a longer piece or work-in- progress. Due to ever-growing response, we do ask that works be under 15 minutes if possible and you must contact Courtney in order to reserve a spot on the line-up at either courtney@comm.net or 891-3698. We do our best to try to accommodate everyone, but the evening does tend to fill up quickly. The potluck begins @ 7:00 (so please try to have your dishes here for then) and the films will begin promptly @ 8:00 p.m. Admission to the event is free IF you are scheduled to screen work or bring a vegetarian dish for the potluck. If you don't have time to cook, you are all invited to still attend by admission.

Eight-track expeditions gave way to vinyl torture sessions...Born first, born last, raised fast in a multiplication table of Rubik's Cube beats and geometrical rhythms. Null Unit is a rich pedigree made strong through natural selection. Composed from ashes, and at the same time of mixed blood lines, joined one year past...Adaptable basement floors, attic stairs loaded down with toolery, technology, wizardry, and wearables. $7 general/$5 members.

High and low (fidelity and culture). The program includes videos by: BJORN MELHUS (The Magic Glass), MIRANDA JULY (Getting Stronger Every Day, 2001), SETH PRICE (Industrial Synth, 2002),JACQUELINE GOSS (The 100th Undone, 2001), LAWRENCE ELBERT (Whitney: Mama's Little Baby, 2000), ANIMAL CHARM (Sunshine Kitty and Lightfoot Fever, Slow Gin Soul Stallion), PIERRE YVES CLOUIN (The Little Big). Freedom Highway: Songs of Resistance and Liberation by Philip King. "When I left Tibet, I lost everything. The only thing I didn't lose was my voice." -Yungchen Lhamo, singer. Listening to the antiseptic pop music that rules the airwaves, you'd never know that the roots of popular music were profoundly political - and that political music continues to inspire people around the world. Indeed, popular music - now little more than a commodity in the global marketplace - is treated with derision whenever any of its stars attempt anything remotely political (think of the scorn that met U2's Bono when he took up the cause of African debt relief). With an exceptional cast of engaged musicians - Ruben Blades, Bono, Billy Bragg, Karan Casey, Elvis Costello, Ani Difranco, Emmylou Harris, Victor Jara, Yungchen Lhamo, Hugh Masekela, Brownie McGhee, Willie Nelson, Louis Perez, Bernice Johnson Reagon, Pete Seeger, The Soweto String Quartet, Sonny Terry, Tom Waits, Norma Waterson, etc., - Freedom Highway highlights the role of music in popular struggles. The battles for US civil rights and freedom for Northern Ireland, as well as the fights against apartheid, the Vietnam war, Pinochet and globalization all gained strength through music. Featuring interviews and moving, intimate performances by some of today's greatest musicians - along with archival footage of past greats like Woody Guthrie and Paul Robeson - Freedom Highwayis a potent reminder that music has the power to do much more than serve as a tool for selling beer and cars. Each night following the film, renowned Venezuelan activist and gifted vocalist GRACIELA BARRETTO will perform a concert of political ballads from throughout South America. $6 general/$5 students & seniors/$4 Zeitgeist members.

Saturday & Sunday, September 28 & 29 @ 8:00 p.m.
War and Peace (Jang Aur Aman) a documentary by Anand Patwardhan. Filmed over three tumultuous years in India, Pakistan, Japan and the United States, after the 1998 nuclear tests on the Indian sub-continent, WAR AND PEACE is the long awaited new film by India's leading and most daring documentary filmmaker, Anand Patwardhan (Father, Son & Holy War and In The Name of God. Anand has presented his award-winning films at Zeitgeist in 1995 and 1999. He is without question one of the most courageous and important artists in the world today). It documents the current, epic journey of peace activism in the face of global militarism and war. Divided into six chapters, the film is framed by the murder of Mahatma Gandhi in 1948. This act of violence was so profound, its portent and poignancy remain undiminished 50 years later. As a child, filmmaker Patwardhan was immersed in the non-violent Gandhian movement. Because of this he, in WAR AND PEACE, examines India's trajectory towards naked militarism with sorrow, although along the way the film captures joyful stories of courage and resistance. Amongst these chapters is a visit to the "enemy country" of Pakistan, where, contrary to expectations, Indian delegates are showered by affection, not only by their Pakistani counterparts in the peace movement, but by ordinary citizens who declare without caution that "hate is the creation of politicians."

WAR AND PEACE examines not merely the militarization of India, but analyzes the human cost that is extracted from its citizens in the name of 'National Security.' From the plight of residents living near the nuclear test site, and the horrendous effects of uranium mining on local indigenous populations, it becomes clear that, contrary to a myth first created in the U.S., there is no such thing as the "peaceful Atom." Scientific research has been hijacked by the war machine, only a handful of practitioners remind us of its potential to fulfill the genuine needs of the people. Going beyond the story of South Asia, WAR AND PEACE follows the extraordinary visit of Japanese Atom Bom survivors after the Indian and Pakistani nuclear tests. Their visit becomes the impetus for a re-examination of events that led to the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Were these bombs necessary? American historians who recently curated an exhibit about this issue for the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC were amazed to find their voices suppressed.

WAR AND PEACE slips seamlessly from its analysis of homemade jingoism to focus on how an aggressive United States has become a Foreign Relations role model. The unofficial U.S. doctrine of 'Might Makes Right' is only too well absorbed and emulated by aspiring Third World elites. As we enter the 21st century, enemies are being re-invented, economies are inextricably tied to the production and sale of weapons, and in the moral wastelands of the world, war has become perennial. Memories of Gandhi seem like a mirage that never was, created by our thirst for peace and our very distance from it. $6 general/$5 students & seniors/$4 Zeitgeist members.

"The film itself is a tour de force, beautifully shot and often darkly funny and much more riveting than the dry subject matter might suggest." - Duncan Campbell, The Guardian

"A frightening examination of the continuing confrontation between nuclear neighbors India and Pakistan. Narrated in quiet yet passionate terms... [WAR AND PEACE] is of immense interest and importance." - Variety.
